Alex A. Avila, MA, LPC, CSAT, CST, CPTT, NCC, ACS, CAT, CBCP
Concerned for each client’s future success and helping them reach their counseling, relationship, and life goals, I believe that providing therapy is more than a job. My principal goal is to make each client feel comfortable. If I am not the best match for your specific counseling needs, I will arrange for you to meet with another therapist or refer you to services that might more effectively match your needs. Additionally, I will recommend current and relevant resources to enhance your personal counseling experience.
Honesty. Respect. Integrity. Confidentiality. Professionalism. These guiding principles inform my work with clients as well as my interactions with colleagues, family, and friends. Through open, honest, and respectful communication, I seek to model healthy relationship behaviors and communication skills for my clients. Maintaining a healthy emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual balance also allows me to achieve excellence on personal and professional levels.
Moreover, I believe spirituality is a strong component for reaching optimum levels of life satisfaction. For me, Christian values and aspects inform my daily living. As a professional counselor, however, I do not impose my personal spiritual beliefs and values on clients. For your benefit, my graduate-level counseling training has equipped me to incorporate your spiritual preference (or religious or non-religious beliefs) with other life components to help you reach your specific goals. While meeting with me, your background and belief system will always be respected and valued.
My Training and Experience
I have enjoyed thousands of hours of professional experience providing counseling and teaching individuals and couples on a variety of life issues. I earned a master’s degree (with honors) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and hold a bachelors degree (graduating Summa Cum Laude) with a dual major in Psychology and Business Administration.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Certified Addiction Technician (CAT) in the State of Colorado, a Board-Certified National Certified Counselor (NCC), Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS), Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist (CSAT), Certified Sex Therapist (CST), Certified Partner Trauma Therapist (CPTT), and Certified Body-Centered Psychotherapist (CBCP). I have also obtained intensive academic and experiential training as an Emotionally Focused Couple Therapist (EFT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) clinician.
I am certified to facilitate the research-supported PREPARE-ENRICH inventory to dating, engaged and married couples. As a PREPARE-ENRICH Seminar Director, I also enjoy teaching counselors, clergy and other professionals to use this very valuable assessment. To help people navigate crisis, I earned a certificate in Critical Incident Stress Management and have obtained safety planning instruction in the global Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) model.
I have written two relationship books: 40 Forms of Intimacy®: Integrating Daily Connection Into Your Couple Relationship and Three Thoughts Couple Devotional: Engaging the Power of Our Minds and Hearts to Cultivate a Lifestyle of Intimacy. My third book will be released in early 2022: Emotional Safety: Honoring Yourself While Developing Trust and Presence to Experience Meaningful Relationships.
In my response to the pandemic, in 2021 I also developed and launched the Intimate Foundations Online Relationship Course.
I am a member in good standing with the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP), International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT), American Board of Christian Sex Therapists (ABCST), American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC), and the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC).
I counsel, teach, supervise, and consult with others. I’ve been invited to be an IITAP teaching faculty member where I train licensed therapists who are seeking certification in the Certified Partner Trauma Therapist program. I also serve on IITAP’s faculty team to help train pastors and ministry leaders to become certified in the Pastoral Sex Addiction Professional program. I thoroughly enjoy delivering presentations and trainings for therapists to help strengthen and expand our body of knowledge as people-helpers!
I proactively seek learning opportunities and frequently attend professional trainings to remain current in the counseling field in my specialty areas as well as in popular mental health topics. I enjoy teaching on relationship issues and various life struggles while bringing awareness to help people live more satisfying, fulfilling, and peaceful lives.
